Ota has a background in Freestyle Wrestling, having competed in many tournaments in the style, and is a former Olympian. Participating in major international and domestic wrestling tournaments while attending the Nippon Sport Science University, he would win the Hungarian Wrestling Grand Prix in his third year at the college  and as a fourth year student he won the Emperor's Cup. 


Going on to become a 3 time Asian Wrestling Championship medalist, Asian Games gold medalist, and World Freestyle Wrestling Championships gold medalist in 2019, Ota would achieve the pinnacle of success in Freestyle Wrestling by claiming the silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He also holds a notable victory over legendary Iranian Wrestler and Olympian Hamid Sourian at the the 2016 Games.
