Obvious they put him against another young talented guy that's dangerous and unranked but could possible win and kill Taira's hype...also the fight is gonna open the prelins of the card so nobody watches it...like what ? Why?
This is the flyweight division! We need new, young, talented guys in the rankings. Both Taira and Van should be getting ranked opponents to climb the ladder and THEN we can have they fight each other in the future if they keep winning.

He's gonna stand and bang against Strickland, but being 5 rounds makes it more difficult for him to win imo.

I think this will be similar to when Dustin Poirier fought Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Strickland vs. Costa
Sean Strickland, TKO, R2
I want Paulo Costa to win, but I don't think he will.

It doesn't matter if you count yourself a "true fan" and not the "mindless mob" the reality is that if he loses this fight he will need to rebuild himself and work on another win streak to go for the title again. There is absolutely no reason for the ufc to take this risk. Not in this division, It's just a bad business decision.
I agree with you that both fighters are young and will improve from this fight likely moving on with good wins but Saying that there is "no shame in losing' and that "this is just the sport" is a good thing to say to whoever loses. The truth in MMA is that it DOES matter if you win or lose and a single loss matters way more then in any other sport beside boxing.
It takes alot to erase that loss from the fans memory.

I'm also sure you know that there is no requirement for a title shot. Look at my boy Chito.
And again my point is, who cares what other people think? "It takes alot to erase that loss from the fans memory." What about your memory?

Undefeated records in combat sports are massively overrated.
